Rebirth and Revolution: Nation-Building in East Asia and the Pacific rimThe recent history of China, Japan, and Vietnam has significant differences from other Asian and African states. Japan remained independent and industrialized and became a great imperialist power. After World War II, Korea, Taiwan, and other industrializing nations gave the Pacific Rim new importance. China and Vietnam suffered from Western and Asian imperialists. With their traditional order in ruins, they had to face the usual problems of underdeveloped colonial peoples. Full-scale revolutions occurred. By the beginning of the 21st century, the result of all the changes gave east Asia a new importance in world affairs.

For our study over chapters 33-35, you and two other partners will be editing a magazine. Your magazine would be published like certain editions of magazines, where the editors reflect on certain years and write a review of what had transpired. Your magazine will be focusing on the last 50 years of the 20th century in the Global South & Pacific Rim, which consists of the following:
Portion one: the Op-ed (ch 33) |
Following WWII, Capitalism & Communism were the two main philosophical/theoretical concepts on which struggling nations could model their system of government & economy. With the two superpowers of the United States & the Soviet Union battling against one another during the Cold War, both had much at stake in spreading their form of government abroad. Nations had to consider what they thought the role of government should be, how it operated, and who benefited, before adopting & acting out their version of government.
|
Your Op-Ed will be written in the style of a High School Student (good luck finding one of those) who is theorizing and writing about their beliefs on the role of government in general society.
There is no length requirement for this Op-Ed, but the following opinion items MUST be included in your Op-Ed essay:

- What is your definition of equality?
- Why should the government care about equality (in any form)?
- What role should government play in keeping society safe and fair?
- What do you give up when you prioritize one form of equality over another? What do you gain when you prioritize one form of equality over another?
- What is the difference between a society focused on building equality of outcomes and one focused on building equality of opportunity?
- What would daily life look like in a society that valued equality of outcomes more?
- What would be something the government could do to encourage/maintain equality of outcomes? Equality of opportunity?

|

- After you have compiled your details in your SPICE chart, you will write a two paragraph report on the Changes & Continuities Over Time (CCOT) that occurred in these regions.

portion five: the Un focuses on africa - a memOIR from a retiring un GENERAL assembly member (CH 34)
The United Nations (UN) was created following WWII as an intergovernmental organization to promote international cooperation. To help in making this a reality, the UN is broken up into many specialized agencies that are focused on specific global issues like famine and the development of industry.
CLICK HERE for the list of UN agencies & what they do. As a whole, the UN is operated by many entities, one of which is the UN General Assembly. The General Assembly are deliberate policy makers who utilize the different specialized agencies to make policy for international cooperation.
|
For this portion of your magazine, you're to write from the view of a member of the UN General Assembly (from any country of your choice), who was a member from 1960-2000. Your writing will be in the style of a memoir, which will focus on a memory about how you had intervened in helping a newly independent African nation become self-sustainable.
Please keep the following in mind:
Please focus your memoir on the following:
Please keep the following in mind:
- During decolonization & nationalism, Africa will have many challenges of independence, like lack of resources, quarrels erupting among rival leaders, classes, & ethnic groups. The resulting instability further hampered development & deflected attention from the real problems hindering progress.
- Africa will undergo changes in their population growth, which will prove to be one of the most important barriers to economic advancement after independence. There are many reasons for this lack of growth in population in Africa.
Please focus your memoir on the following:
- What was the direction/focus that the nationalist leader wanted to take their newly created African nation? Was this direction a possibility?
- What was the condition of the African nation when they began their movement towards independence?
- What were the hindrances to population growth or industry to this African nation?
- What policies were you a part of in creating to help this African nation develop/grow?
- How did these policies impact the problems of population growth or industry of the African nation?
- Did these policies impact anyone specific in the African community (i.e. women)?
- What UN special agencies were involved in this specific instance?
This information will most likely be fictitious, and you can focus on what had happened to Africa as a whole and apply it to whatever African nation you decide to write about.

PORTION TEN: CHINESE COMMunist control cartoon (ch 35)
An interesting note: In 1958, Mao Zedong ordered the Chinese people to kill all the sparrows in the country to protect the rice crops. The effort backfired as, without the sparrows to eat insects, the locust population exploded and wiped out food crops, contributing to the starvation of tens of millions of people.
|
During the Mid-1950s divisions arose in the newly created People's Republic of China within the Communist Party. In response, Mao Zedong, the leader of the Communist Revolution, who was able to gain enough of the peasant's support during the Chinese Civil War after WWII, launched a campaign under the slogan:
