This unit is divided up in four nice categories: Industrialization, Imperialism, Revolutions, and Global Migration.
2. The Industrial Revolution (which is probably in the Top 3 for most important events in world history) will change the way that everything is made and cause Europe to become even more exploitative of the surrounding world. 3. With these new technologies, Europe will seek out more raw materials to capitalize on, leading to Imperialism and the colonization of the rest of the unexplored/conquered world. 4. Spurred on by the Enlightenment ideals, many places around the world will tire of European control and rebel, mostly for hopes of establishing themselves as independent nations. 5. New global powers will emerge and with industrialization, people from around the world will begin to migrate to where these new jobs and opportunities are. |
Theme 1: Lots to discuss here, industrialization will completely change how humans will interact with their environment. The world will go from predominantly agrarian to one led by manufacturing. This leads to a large shift in urbanization and people moving to cities, as well as migrating and leaving their country to look for better work and opportunities as new emerging countries like the United States become an attractive new place to emigrate to.
Theme 2: With industrialization, comes a large amount of new technology and tools. With the global migration, we will begin to see more interaction between cultures as well, some good, some not so much (the Opium Wars, Boxer Rebellion). Christian missionaries will continue their work in Africa as well, looking to expand their influence and increase their number of followers. Also, this will be the time of the Enlightenment thinkers (discussed some last unit) and their new ideas on things like economic and political systems and structures will largely shape attitudes and lead to some rebellions and revolts. Theme 3: Politically, this the age of imperialism, revolution, and the true emergence of nationalism. European countries (Britain, France, and the Netherlands especially) will continue their process of colonization and soon Europe will be in a non-stop competition to expand their empires to various parts of the world. These competitions will lead to conflicts, and most notably, the people that are being ruled over by Imperial forces will eventually take a stand of revolt in hopes of independence. The most notable of these will take place in the Western Hemisphere, in the American colonies, Haiti, and much of Latin America. In Europe, revolutions like the French Revolution will send notice to the absolute monarchs of old that one can no longer rule without the consent of the people, and that their voices must be heard. This is also the time period in which, the United States and Germany make their way as global players on the international stage. Theme 4: Europe will continue to look to exploit and take advantage of their colonies and now imperial holdings to bring in more raw materials that they can now mass produce into goods thanks to the Industrial Revolution. The big change will now be in the new economic views of the Enlightenment thinkers and the resulting views of European capitalism. Capitalism will the backbone of the European powers and some will look for alternative methods to it, most famously is Karl Marx's philosophy known as Communism. Theme 5: Industrialization will also lead to new changes in the social construct of most societies. There will become a rapid rise to the working class and this will change the social hierarchy and lead to tensions between the elite and working class. The larger amounts of global migration will also lead to new racial and ethnic tensions in societies, and while still taboo, you will see races and ethnicities mix again every so often as there is more contact between people that for a very long time were isolated from one another. unit v spice chartAREAS OF FOCUS |
